Arlington Elementary School Student Wins Ruthe Jackson Youth Leadership Award

Arlington’s very own Lauren Hammonds won first place in the elementary school category in the distinguished Ruthe Jackson Youth Leadership Award. The award recognizes the outstanding efforts made by youth whose accomplishments are bringing about cleaner, more beautiful campuses, parks and communities, thus making Texas a better place to live.

A nature enthusiast, Lauren’s love of the outdoors has been evident since her toddler years. Always the first to go outdoors and the last to come inside, Lauren has become an avid birding enthusiast and supports her family with raising their five backyard urban chickens and maintaining a butterfly garden, fruit trees, a sunflower fort and an edible garden.  Most recently Lauren received a scholarship from the Metro Beekeeper’s Association to learn the art of beekeeping.

In school, Lauren has served on numerous school clubs such as the student council, Recycling Green Team and the Eco-Club to help promote environmental stewardship. A leader among young people, she works on various school, personal, and community- led initiatives, such as Arlington’s Eco-Fest, Cache-In-Trash-Out events and tree plantings. Lauren distributes environmental awareness posters around her neighborhood and collects coins for wildlife which she uses to make an annual contribution to the Adopt-A-Nest Sea Turtle and Bat World Sanctuary and the Adopt-A-Bat Program.  This year she has contributed twice to National Wildlife Federation’s Endangered Species adoption program with guidance of her mother and Keep Arlington Beautiful Board Member, Jennifer Hammonds, who not only works for the NWF but has been an active influence for Lauren’s love of nature.

In addition to the award recognition, a $100 cash prize will be presented to Lauren at the annual Keep Texas Beautiful State Conference in San Antonio this June.  Congratulations Lauren!
